An intumescent system is a combination of various compounds that in the event of fire react together as a result of the temperature increase to form a carbon foam. This foam attains a thickness of 10 to 100 times of the originally applied coating and insulates the substrate material through its low thermal conductivity. For steel-framed structures in particular this can be essential, because they can lose their structural stability during fires, when temperatures exceed500 °C. Examples of such buildings are airports, shopping centers, hospitals and office complexes.
